Walking away, Ash ran a hand through his hair, his gaze fixed on something ahead of him that he did not see. His mind churned and, for a second, he felt a sense of disbelieving laughter tickling the back of his throat. Still, he managed to subdue it, reminding himself that he had a duty and was not to draw attention to himself.
Straightening, Ash inclined his head to an acquaintance passing by, then stepped inside and handed his coat to a footman. Indeed, he ought to remember why he was here and push all thoughts of Miss Glass away.
Far, far away.
Despite his resolve, Ash felt his teeth grind together. Yes, it had been foolish of him to assume that she would attend tonightâs ball. She was, after all, a governess, not a lady. If only he had remembered that before assuming she would attend! He had seen the hurt in her eyes when his thoughtless remark had reminded her that she was merely a governess, here to see to the children and not dance the night away.
Guilt assailed him. âWhat an ass I was to say that,â he grumbled under his breath. Still, in her presence, Ash seemed to forget everything else. The world fell away, leaving them the only two people, shielded in a bubble that suspended time and even reality. Ash had seen only her, and the desire to dance with her had made him forget. Indeed, how he wanted to dance with her!
To him, she was not merely a governess. She was much, much more. She was priceless! And one day, Ash would make certain that everyone knew that!
Nevertheless, right here, right now, he ought to remember why he was at Pembroke Hall, why he had sought Pierceâs help in speaking to Lord Pembroke and ensuring that Amhurst and Kearsley would receive an invitation. Judging from the guests he had thus far observed, Ash knew that the Pembrokeâs Christmas Ball had been intended as a more private affair, invitations only issued to friends and family, people they held dear and wished to see for the holidays.
Ash ought to remember that. He ought to remember the sacrifice they had made on his account and see it well used in the pursuit of justice. If they played their cards right, there was a chance that they could obtain further information that would assist them in their ongoing investigation. Kearsley was indeed a man who did not think before he spoke or acted. He was one to indulge himself whenever he desired to do so. Perhaps if Amhurst feared that Kearsley might reveal something harmful to him, he would intervene.
Striding down the hall, Ash stopped as his gaze spotted Blackbourne through the open drawing room doors, standing near the terrace windows, speaking to a familiar golden-haired lady.
As far as Ash could tell, it was Miss Spencer.
Hoping that Blackbourne had not also forgotten his reason for being here, Ash strode onward, knowing that he could not address his colleague openly and reveal their connection to one another.
